Where would EL be without our sit feature? You see it everywhere all the time. At the deposites, lining arenas, isn't it the greatest!? :p It has already become a near custom in EL to sit whenever you have even a couple of seconds in idle.
But how does it directly benefit EL? It may seem like the most small feature and the least necessary at first glance, but really it helps the community in a number of ways.
First: Storages are less cluttered and more accessible due to the NPCs being more visible.
Second: Players can reach a closer social bonding level. Example, player sitting in tight knit circles rather than in a messy clump looking like a bunch of teen zombie hooligans.
Third: It allows you to inform the people around you of your real life status. What do you think that person sitting in the far corner in one of the many rooms in the Glacmor skill academy is doing? S/He is most definitely not busy, and most often can be determined as afk, pending on the level of solitude (i.e. VotD rooftops is definitely an afk spot)
I could've created a second list about why players really enjoy sitting, but I think that list already justifies my point.

The Showoff
After buying my new Skull Crossbones Scarf, I can't help but wear it all the time. I know 2 emu is not a huge sacrifice, but what about the people that drop by the PL lupines with their titanium set, or whatever else their proud of? Technically that's a huge sacrifice, but really it's the same as showing off your new Skull Crossbone Scarf. C'mon, who didn't just walk around for several minutes and gush in gm when they got their first CoL? (I hope no one for the sake of me not looking like a total newb, hehe) What is the greatest length you've seen someone (or you) go to just to show off?
